Protecting Your Home with Kindness: A Natural Guide to Banishing Moths

At MadeKind, we believe that a clean home should never come at the cost of your health or the planet’s wellbeing. We often talk about "cleaning with kindness," and that philosophy extends to how we handle unwelcome guests like moths.

Traditional methods rely on harsh chemicals like naphthalene, which can irritate the respiratory system and linger in the air long after they’re gone. Instead, we advocate for a gentler, plant-powered approach that uses nature’s own defense mechanisms to protect your favourite clothing.

Here is our 'MadeKind Guide' to clearing out moths the natural way, while keeping your home safe for your family.
1. The Deep Clean: Evicting the Invisible
Moths themselves don't eat your clothes; it’s their larvae, which thrive in dark, undisturbed corners. The first step is a thorough clean.
  • Vacuum Every Crevice: Use a HEPA-filter vacuum to reach the back of wardrobes, under furniture, and along skirting boards. This removes eggs and larvae before they hatch. Immediately empty your vacuum outside to prevent them from crawling back in.
  • Wipe Down with Vinegar: For hard surfaces, a solution of white vinegar and water is incredibly effective. Its acidity changes the pH of the surface, making it impossible for moth eggs to survive. The MadeKind Multi Surface Cleaner is also very effective as it contains Lavender & Rosemary essentail oils which repels moths.
2. Temperature Treatments: The Natural Killers
If you find signs of an infestation, you don’t need pesticides, you just need a change in temperature.
  • The Big Freeze: For delicate silks or wools that can’t handle a hot wash, place them in a sealed bag and pop them in the freezer for 72 hours. This effectively kills all life stages of the moth.
  • A Hot Wash: Wash linens and durable fabrics at 60°C or steam clean.
3. Scent-Sational Deterrents
Once your space is clean, the goal is to make it uninviting for adult moths. Nature has provided us with beautiful, aromatic tools for this.
  • Cedarwood: Cedar contains natural oils that disrupt moth pheromones. Use cedar blocks or rings on your hangers, and give them a light sand every few months to refresh their scent.
  • Herbal Sachets: Moths are repelled by scents such as lavender, rosemary, and thyme. Tuck small cloth bags of these dried herbs into your drawers or hang them in your wardrobe.
  • Essential Oils: A few drops of lavender or peppermint oil on cotton wool balls can act as a powerful deterrent. It also leaves your wardrobe smelling like a spa.
4. Mindful Storage Habits
Prevention is a daily ritual. Moths love "fixed" environments, so a little movement goes a long way.
  • Airtight Barriers: Store out-of-season clothes in airtight, heavy-duty containers. Avoid thin plastic bags, as moths can sometimes chew through them.
  • Keep it Moving: Moths hate being disturbed. Every month or so, shake out your clothes, open your wardrobe doors to let light and air in, and move furniture slightly.
  • Only Store Clean Clothes: Moths are attracted to the proteins in skin cells, hair, and food spills. Always wash your items before packing them away.
These kind, plant-based methods allow you to effectively protect your home without harsh chemicals.
