What is the difference between natural and synthetic fragrances?
Natural fragrance is derived from essential oils from plants - flowers, fruits and resins, whilst synthetic fragrances are created in a lab using chemical processes with petroleum as a starting point. Synthetic scents tend to be stronger whilst natural scents can be slightly more subtle and complex. Synthetic fragrances contain chemicals such as phthalates, benzene and formaldehyde which are linked to health issues whilst essential oils are generally a lot safer although some people and pets are sensitive to some oils.
What is the difference between soy wax and normal ‘paraffin’ candle wax?
Soy wax comes from Soybeans which are natural, renewable and biodegradable. Paraffin wax is a by-product of petroleum refining which is a non renewable fossil fuel. Soy wax burns cleanly with no soot or toxins whereas paraffin wax creates black soot as it burns and releases harmful chemicals, contributing to indoor air pollution. Soy wax also burns slower and longer as it has a lower melting point compared to paraffin wax.
